How flex works
It’s all about flexibility
HP Canada's Flexible Benefits Program lets you tailor your benefits to you – and your family’s – needs. It includes dental, medical, life insurance, disability coverage and accident insurance, as well as retirement and savings plans.
You choose!
You choose the benefits and the level of coverage that are right for you and your family. Each year, HP Canada Co. gives you flex dollars to help pay for your choices. Depending on your benefit choices, you may have flex dollars left over. If you do, they will be deposited into a Health Care Spending Account (HCSA). And the best part is that you can change your benefit choices each year as your needs change.
Who can you cover?
That’s up to you. Yes, more choice! You can choose to cover:
If you work at least 20 hours a week
If your spouse is eligible
Who do we consider a spouse?
Your spouse is the person:
- To whom you are legally married, or
- With whom you have been living in a common-law relationship for at least 12 months, and who you publicly represent as your spouse or partner.
If they are eligible
Who do we consider a dependent child?
To be eligible, a child must be:
- A natural or adopted child (or in the process of being adopted),
- A stepchild or child of your common-law partner, if the child primarily lives with you, or
- A child related by blood or marriage for whom you are the legal guardian.
The child must be:
- Unmarried,
- Financially dependent on you, and
- Under the age of 21, or under the age of 26 if registered as a full-time student at a university or similar institution.
Children of any age are eligible if they are disabled and financially dependent on you; however, they must have been covered as your dependents before reaching the age of 21.
Who pays?
- HP Canada Co. provides you with flex dollars that you can use to purchase the benefits you need.
- Some benefits are automatically paid for through payroll deductions – for example, optional benefits.
- If you choose higher levels of coverage for you and your family, then you may have to share in the cost through payroll deductions. The Manulife online benefit enrolment tool does all the calculations for you and ensures that the taxes you pay are minimized.
It’s all right here
We’ve made it easy and put information and links to everything right here: an overview of your flexible and retirement benefits, information on how to submit claims online and an enrolment checklist. Need to check some personal details? Go to the Manulife website.
When things change
If you marry, have a child or experience another life event, you may be able to change your coverage, as long you do it within 31 days of the life event. If you miss the deadline, you’ll have to wait until the next annual enrolment.
